Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at the Muskegon County Waste Water Treatment Facility in Muskegon County Michigan USA.

Time

We had gone up to the Facility in the morning to see if the Snowy Owls were around and we found this one sitting on this rock abserving her domain. I was able to get to about 50 yards from her without causing her any distress. When we left the area she was still sitting there watching the ducks that were in the pond.

Lighting

It was mid-morning with some clouds and not bright direct sunshine.

Equipment

Nikon D3300 with a Sigma 18-300 mm zoom lens.

Inspiration

We love to see owls and when we had the opportunity to see winter visitors from the north we couldn't pass this up.

Editing

This was shot in RAW and cropped for size and magnification. No other editing was done.

In my camera bag

I also carry a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm 5.6f lens which I purchased two months after this shot. I also have a Sigma 1.4x teleconverter which I rarely use. I find that although it works better on my Sigma 18-300mm than the NIKKOR 200-500mm I lose detail and clarity with it. I will crop in editing to get the magnnification I desire instead of using the teleconverter.

Feedback

Pay attention to the wildlife you are trying to photo. If your presence is disturbing them you are too close to them. Also observe the other humans around, if they are disturbing the animal(s) leave the area so you are not the cause for the animal's stress.
