Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was shot at Keoladeo National Park, Rajasthan, India. It is a World Heritage sight and the perfect place for bird enthusiast to be at.

Time

This was shot at 5:30pm just as the sun was going down and a great day of shooting at the park was about to come to an end. As I saw this bird(an India Darter) perched in the path of the setting sun I waited for about 20 minutes for the sun to position itself behind the bird which was very being extremely cooperative and did not budge from its position.

Lighting

With this photograph I wanted to show more than just the golden light of the setting sun that is when I heard the the bird make a call. This is when I decided to wait for it to call out again to take the final shot.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D750 and the Sigma 150-600mm lens supported by a Benro monopod.

Inspiration

The inspiration behind this shot was to show more than just a bird silhouetted against the setting sun. I wanted the photograph to have more life, more dynamism to it. The action of the bird calling out does just that, adds a soul to the image.

Editing

Interestingly, not much has been done to this image in post-processing. Just the basic colour corrections.

In my camera bag

My camera body of choice is my Nikon D750 - a great all-round camera. When I am out shooting birds, my choice of lens is my newly acquired Nikon 200-500mm F5.6 - a fantastic lens for the price. It is sharp, has a great zoom range, is not too heavy and the VR works well. Though the lens itself isn't too heavy still I prefer to use a monopod with it for some extra stability.

Feedback

Always be patient with whatever you trying to capture, breathe, slow down and think how is it that you can add your own personal touch to something that has been captured hundreds of times by hundreds of people before you. I my case it was the action of the bird making a call that made the difference. When you find that special something is when you'll be able to capture something that truly stands out.
