Location
This photo was taken on my way out of an old mica mine in an area called " Nordre Spro Gruver" near Nesodden in NorwayTime
This was taken 23rd of March in 2014, at 20;56Lighting
I tried a few different things to expose for the walls of the entrance and the light from the outside, like the cameraflash, longer exposure and so on, but in the end I landed on just using my small flashlight to lightpaint the walls and the ceilingEquipment
I shot this on a Canon 70d with a canon 17-40mm lens on a tripodInspiration
After I had finished at the diving school for the day and had my session at the gym and so on I had been looking at this location online and I knew it was a big hole in the roof of the mine so I went there to try to catch startrails from inside the mine, but when I got there it started to get quite cloudy and eventually the rain came, so no startrails that evening. But as I was walking out the entrance I noticed the beautiful warm light from the other side of the Oslofjord and the contrast it made with the cold, kinda shiny walls of the mine entrance, so I just had to unpack my gear again and frame it up.Editing
I did most of my work on this image in camera, I only adjusted the exposure up a little bit, and then some highlight and shadow adjustments. In my camera bag
I usually always keep my bag packed and ready to go, and I think I take with me way too much stuff aswell, but then I'm always prepared atleast. I have the canon 70d of course, a few lenses like the nifty fifty, samyang 14mm, canon 17-40mm and a canon 60mm lens. I also have the big stopper from Lee in there, a intervalometer, lighter and 2 small flashlights, extra batteries, lenscloth and a blowie thing. My tripod is also attached on the outside of the bag, and a couple of wark gloves now during the cold wintertimeFeedback
The advice I have for others is that you don't really have to venture that far from home to capture something special, this one was about a 10minute drive and 30minute walk from where I lived, use the internet to find out whats interesting in your area. And I guess my biggest tip is that if you don't get what you set out to get, like startrails or sunset or whatever it may be, keep scanning the area and look around for other interesting compositions, shapes, light, it could be anything!
