The photo symbolizes Singapore in my opinion. This city is surrounded by so much extravagance and wealth, yet amongst all that, there is a true sense of culture. This is a beautiful contrast between traditional and modern architecture.

Very nice "blue hour" shot. Great contrast we often find in big asian cities.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the 9th floor of an apartment building adjacent to the Buddha Tooth Temple in Chinatown of Singapore. In order to get to the right floor I had to pass a few homeless people who were not happy that I was walking through their living room. Felt like I had to pass the bridge troll to pass.

Time

This was taking during the blue hour and also at pure dark. This is a blended image so I wanted to get the nice blue detail in the sky to complement the orange and yellow glow of the buildings.

Lighting

This was a blend so the lighting was crucial. I was setup for this shot way before the sunset so that I could capture that magical blue hour shot for the sky and also gave a nice blue cast to the roof of the temple itself. Then I waited until the sky was black and the lights on the buildings and the temple illuminated.

Equipment

I was using a Sony A7R, Really Right Stuff TVC-24L Tripod, Really Right Stuff BH-40 Ballhead, and Zeiss 16-35mm lens, and a sony trigger release.

Inspiration

At the time that I had taken this photo this spot had just become a very popular spot for photographers but not enough where it was packed. I was actually the only one here at this time. Upon looking I saw alot of photographers who took this photograph but took it at pitch dark which left very little detail in the sky. So I knew that with my manual blending technique I would be able to capture something unique compared to the other shots that I had seen.

Editing

First step was to resolve distortion from the wide angle lens. This was performed in Capture One using keystonning. I then performed a manual blend with the blue hour shot for the sky and the buildings. This was my base image that I used. From there I took my shot that was taken during pure dark with all of the lights on, on the temple and the skyscrapers. There I used the blending mode lighten to blend the lights into the blue hour shot. Afterwards I used Nik Collection Color Effects pro to add contrast. In Photoshop I performed some light color correction to enhance the blues and orange tones to ensure they worked well together. Then I applied selected sharpening using a high pass filter in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

My go to is Sony A7R, Really Right Stuff TVC-24L Tripod, Really Right Stuff BH-40 Ballhead, and Zeiss 16-35mm lens, and a sony trigger release. Since I only shoot landscapes and cityscapes these are the only things I really need to capture my images. With my shots I am usually sitting in one place for a long time to capture my shots so I usually have my headphones to jam out while I wait for the perfect light, and always have tons of snacks.

Feedback

One of the things I wish I would have known about was that during the Chinese New Year in February the whole entire temple is lit up. It is a very unique event and would add that extra element to an already beautiful scene.
