Finally made it to Hong Kong and what a place. There is so much energy and movement everywhere. Was a bit overwhelming at first. But while taking this shot I threw on some heavy metal and everything started to calm down. Rather than being just chaos, everything had a rhythm, and everything just flowed with the tempo. Was a great moment finding peace in such a manic area.

Behind The Lens

Location
This was taken on an overpass in Downtown Hong Kong. The thing that is so unique about this location is you can capture 5 lanes of traffic in one shot. So it offers you a great opportunity to get some great light trails in your shot.
Time
With most of my shots I always like to incorporate multiple times of the day to give a different perspective that most have never seen. Coming into this shot I knew exactly what times I needed to capture. For the sky I knew that I wanted a rich blue from blue hour and then later in the night once the sky was darker I was able to capture the car trails.
Lighting
The lighting that was crucial was the light trails from the cars. Because there are 5 lanes of traffic not all lanes are moving at the same time. So during a 25 sec exposure only 2 or 3 lanes were moving at a time. Multiple exposures were needed to ensure there was a solid trail on each lane. During shooting I would periodically switch the white balance from warm to cool to get different color light trails.
Equipment
This was shot with a Sony A7R, Zeiss 16-35mm, using a Really Right Stuff TVC-24L tripod with a BH-40 Ballhead.
Inspiration
Hong Kong is a busy place with a large population crammed into a very small area. There is so much movement and energy there that I wanted a way to showcase that. I think this photo captures that feeling but also simplifies it as well, organized chaos I guess.
Editing
Exposure blending of some sorts is always in my images. Since I was unable to capture all the car trails in one image I had to manually blend the rest of the car trails in. With 5 separate exposures I was able to incorporate all the cars trails ensuring there was a solid line of traffic. Using the blending mode "lighten" and masking I was able to blend all the car trails together. I also used warm and cool exposures to incorporate different color car trails.
In my camera bag
Since I am 100% location independent weight and portability are always my biggest concern. So that's why I go with a super light system. Sony A7R provides the same punch as a larger DSLR but half the weight and size. Since I am a landscape and cityscape photographer I am alway shooting wide so my on hand lens is always the Zeiss 16-35mm and the Tamron 14mm f2.8 for astrophotography. For my tripod it had to be Really Right Stuff, since I travel full time I needed something strong enough to keep up with my lifestyle. These tripods are rock solid and weighs practically nothing.
Feedback
Patients was the key on this shot. It meant setting up the tripod and waiting for close to 3 hours for all these moments to happen. But taking that extra time to capture all these elements can truly turn an average shot into something unique. Having all these elements planned out before hand makes shooting that much easier, you have your vision, you just wait for all the right moments.
