Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a field near my sisters house in Bedford, Indiana.

Time

The photo was taken approximately 6:00 on a late summer afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting in this photo was very difficult to work with. The sun was harsh that day and I was a new photographer so I was getting frustrated but I was determined to learn the settings on my camera to compensate for the terrible lighting. I did learn some new settings and also learned a lot about working with lighting using this photo in Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC

Equipment

The camera I used was my first DSLR camera, a Nikon D3100 with a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm lens.

Inspiration

I was a new photographer and I was eager to learn everything I could. I was also exploring the type of photography I enjoyed most. This photo is of my niece whom I thought would make a beautiful subject to practice with.

Editing

Yes, this particular photo did require a lot of post-processing. The original photo was somewhat overexposed due to the harsh lighting conditions of the day and my inexperience at the time. I tried many different tricks to compensate and managed to learn about the HDR toning tool in Photoshop CC and then finished it up with some adjustments to the clarity and hues making it a black and white image in Lightroom CC.

In my camera bag

Until recently when I purchased a new Nikon D5300, I always carried my Nikon D3100 DSLR camera along with my Nikon AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm lens, which I use most often. I also carry my Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm lens, my Sigma DG 70-300mm macro lens, a few filters and of course extra batteries and SD cards.

Feedback

Learn all you can about lighting and how to compensate for less than favorable conditions. Also, do not throw out a photo that could have potential just because the lighting isn't perfect. Look beyond the imperfection. You can learn a lot by testing different adjustments in your editing software.
