Location
There is rather interesting place in Russia called Nikola-Lenivets (literally "Lazy Nikola") village. A small half-dead place among the hills and forests on the bank of Ugra river. Russian artist Nikolai Polissky chosen it as a base for his architecture experiments. During last decade strange, interesting and fearsome sculptures and buildings emerged in the hills around Nikola-Lenivets. This sculpture 12 meters tall called Bobur is one of them - crazy dreams of Nikolai PolisskyTime
This is the middle of November day. Strong wind and rain suddenly transforming into snow made this shooting especially difficultLighting
Lighting as everything for this picture. I used remote controlled flash as the source of back light to lighten the hair of the model and separate her from the dark backgroundEquipment
I used rather simple camera Nikon D5500 which I received for the test and decided to make something cool with this tiny thing =) I also used 17-55 f/2,8 Nikkor lens. But the core equipment for this picture was Nikon SB-900 flash controlled remotely via Phottix Odin transmitter and receiverInspiration
I really love weird objects of Nikola-Lenivets and I wanted to do something new, never shot before. So I decided to use some light and wait for the bad weather which is quite often in Russia in NovemberEditing
This picture was nice even without post-processing - good balanced light, good mood. But I wanted to make this picture even more dramatic so I processed it with Adobe Camera RAW. Added some contrast, darkened shadows and added vignetingIn my camera bag
I mostly do travel photography and my idea is that travel photographer should be ready for any task. My main camera is Nikon D810 and a spare one is Nikon D700. I use a set of zoom lenses to minimize weight and be as fast as possible in the shooting. I use AF-S Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8, AF-S Nikkor 14- 24 f/2.8 and AF Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8. Lately I started using cool 250-500 Tamron lens which opened another field in landscape photography - abstract images. I always travel with good steady Gitzo tripodFeedback
Find interesting sights and object and try to think of a story around it. Good story or a feeling of this story, some condition or mood will help you to come up with good idea for shooting. Experiment with light and remotecontrolled flashes. Ask someone you really can rely on to assist you in shooting - hold flash set it's strength and point anywhere necessary
