I took this picture during expedition to erupting volcano Flat Tolbachik, Kamchatka, Russia. To take this picture I had to camp in a tent near this flaming rock at -35CTime
This picture was made an hour after the sunset. But really I was shooting all time long even at night to get as much pictures as possible as I understood this is an opportunity I might never have againLighting
It was scary. Really. You feel the heat of molten rock and coldness of extreme siberian winter at the same time. The earth is trembling under your feet and cold wind blows volcanic ash right into your face. It was a struggleEquipment
I used my old Nikon D700 and Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 for this image. And of course my Gitzo tripod as the shutter speed was more than a secondInspiration
The first time I herd this eruption started I decided I should go there no matter what. I spent a fortune to get there, fly there by helicopter and camp there with supplies enough to stand a week cut from civilization. Bu as soon as I got there I started shootingEditing
This picture is fin by itself, no heavy postprocessing is necessary. I developed it from RAW brightening darks and darkening lights a bit and balanced colors to some extent. What you see on this picture is extremely close to what I have seen thereIn my camera bag
I mostly do travel photography and my idea is that travel photographer should be ready for any task. My main camera is Nikon D810 and a spare one is Nikon D700. I use a set of zoom lenses to minimize weight and be as fast as possible in the shooting. I use AF-S Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8, AF-S Nikkor 14- 24 f/2.8 and AF Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8. Lately I started using cool 250-500 Tamron lens which opened another field in landscape photography - abstract images. I always travel with good steady Gitzo tripodFeedback
This image is unique in a way. The eruption occurred on a very low altitude of 2000 m above sea level and on a very flat place where helicopter can land. Most other eruptions happen in less inviting places and conditions - on the top of the volcano or on the shoreline. So normally to take a picture like this you should monitor news on volcanic activity all over the world. There aren't many active volcanos around the world so that's not a difficult task. If you find the news of started eruption check out if it's reachable. If possible, plan an expedition - find local people capable of organizing expedition and calculate possible expenses. Be brave and be bald. Focus on your task but don't forget that no picture is worth your life
