Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture during my ethnography expedition to Uzbekistan, where I spent a month living with locals, picturing their life. I mad this picture during my first day in Khiva - small town with strong relation to it's history. This old man found shelter from mid day hot sun in the mosque and fell asleep. Another man saw me pointing camera at the sleeping man, smiled and silently nodded his head as if saying "Go ahead!"

Time

Second part of the day when the sun is still very hot

Lighting

I just noted this man and it was a rare situation when everything is in it's place - strong face, background, colors and light. This man was sleeping inside the courtyard of the mosque, so the harsh light of the day was not casting deep shadows over old man's face. Later in postprocessing I added deep contrast in details to make stronger impression

Equipment

Nikon D700 camera with Nikkor AF 80-200 f/2.8 lens

Inspiration

I was roaming Khiva town looking for some interesting faces and situations along the way. I was all like in arabian tale with old wise people and roaming adventurers. This old man was completely fitting into this picture

Editing

I did rather strong post-processing on this picture. First of all I used High Pass filter to boost details on the hair and skin. Than I added toning to golden color in the lights and a bit of bluish in shadows. The technique I use much resembles vanilla effect normally used in wedding and portrait photography. I changed it a bit to fit travel portrait photography by locally boosting contrast after adding toning.

In my camera bag

This shot was don during my 3-months long expedition over Central Asia. For this king of expeditions I take mostly everything I might need. That is two cameras (I had some dread cases of my cameras going malfunction so I prefer to have a spare one). My main lens is Nikkor AF-S 24-70 f/2.8 which I like for it's speed and quality. The next one is AF Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 - old but superb lens of exceptional quality. This picture was made with this one. The next is AF-S Nikkor 14-24 f/2,8 which I use for landscape, architecture photography and some funny pictures with high destortion. I also take 50-mm f/1.4 lens and a 90-mm macro lens for portraits and close-ups of flowers and other tiny things. My carbon tripod and 15-inch macbook also accompany me in all my adventures. This sums up to almost 15 kg of gear. Not including light and radio-synchronisers which I also prefer to take on some assignments by they travel in a separate bag

Feedback

Be perceptive to everything what surrounds you. Be quick to point out different situations on the street and capture the moment before it's gone. Always have your camera ready for action. When shooting people try to be unseen to capture real emotions instead of posing for the camera and try to feel the mood of people as not everyone is happy from being photographed
