Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken inside a preserved area from Atlantic Forest in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro State.

Time

Close to sunset time, afternoon.

Lighting

It was a cloudy day, so the available light was a diffused light. To take pictures about nature, at most I prefer to shoot using only natural available light, as a way to show my real view experience.

Equipment

This one was taken with a Canon EOS 550D with a Canon Compact Macro f2.5 lens attached to a tripod, cause the low available light.

Inspiration

Always I have an opportunity, I love to do trips inside the rainforest and to take good pictures about butterflies at the real habitat are always an awesome and challenging subject... The butterfly was fluttering (opening and closing it wings) over a trunk. Probably just erupted from it's chrysalis and was doing it's first wing movements.

Editing

At most I take pictures at RAW mode, so i always do a post-processing using lightroom. With this photo there is too few post processing, just a little adjusts at white balance, sharpness, contrast and exposure.

In my camera bag

I like to go to the forest with two camera bodies (Canon 60D & 550D) with a Canon 50mm f2.5 Compact Macro, a sigma 70-300mm attached and a Canon 10-22mm f3.5 to landscaping shots.

Feedback

Initially, to find this type of capture you must be observant. After locating, make slow and silent movements. For the photographic record itself, I prefer not to use flashlight. This choice has the advantage of offering a very close picture of the actual light conditions, but generally difficult in the final image quality. To capture this action over the bark surface, was important to use the tripod, cause the low available light, the necessary exposure was 0.5s at ISO 200, which would not have been possible at handheld shooting. Like explained above, the butterfly was fluttering and during this opportunity i take two photographs using a tripod, this one with the closed wings showing it's profile and another one, with opened wings with ISO increased to 800 to take shots at 1/80s. This photo can be viewed as my second upload here at viewbug.
