Behind The Lens

Location

I live near to Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire and decided to treat the family to a day out there (secretly wanted to test my new Nikon 300mm f2.8 vr too!!). This particular shot was taken inside one of the two lion pride enclosures they have at the park.

Time

This was taken late morning and the sky was pretty overcast. Poor lighting helped me decide to convert this image to mono.

Lighting

In poor lighting I find it often pays to think black and white as you can add punch to the image easier.

Equipment

My Nikon D7200 with a Nikon 300mm f2.8 vr. I shot handheld as I was in the car and driving which meant some acrobatic positioning sometimes!

Inspiration

I am a big cat fan and this one in particular seemed to be full of mischief. He is a young male and was very playful with his siblings!

Editing

Cropped slightly and converted to mono and sharpened

In my camera bag

It varies from trip to trip but as I am now mostly shooting wildlife I always carry my Nikon D7200, Nikon 300mm f2.8 vr, Tamron 90mm f2.8 vc, Nikon1.7x tc, a manfrotto 055 tripod with a Lensmaster RH-2 gimbal head.

Feedback

Clean your car windows before going into a safari park! It will make the world of difference to your shots.
