This image was taken at a local zoo in Somerset.Time
The shot was taken early in the afternoon and the light was terrible with overcast conditions, which is one of the reasons I had decided to convert the image to mono.Lighting
With poor lighting conditions it always worth considering what a image would look like in black and white.Equipment
I had my Nikon d7200 with a Nikon 70-300mm Vr lens attached. The lion was about 50 feet away from me and this image is a tight crop on his head as the sky behind him was bland and dull.Inspiration
Just look at him! A truly magnificent creature and even though he was in a large pen he was sat right at the top of a play frame surveying everything about him with this imperious look.Editing
Cropped, boosted contrast and tweaked the highlight/shadow sliders. Finally sharpened in smart sharpen.In my camera bag
My camera bag contains my Nikon D7200 body which is a superb all rounder. My lenses consist of a Nikon 35mm f1.8, a Nikon 70-300mm VR, a Tokina 11-16m f2.8 wide angle lens and my Tamron 90mm F2.8 macro lens. I laso use a Meke sb910 flash and various filters. Finally my two tripods, a Benro travel tripod and my sturdier manfrotto 055 tripod which is simply superb and so versatile.Feedback
Zoos are a great place to get images of animals we dont see in our native homes. Always take your time a if you do visit a zoo choose just a few of the inhabitants and watch them for a while to see what they do. When it comes to shooting in bad light always consider a black and white. This shot looked quite bland as a colour but when I had played around with it with the intention of making it a black and white it really has made it pop.
