Location
This photo was taken at the Hawk Conservancy Trust in Wiltshire, UK.Time
Late morning.Lighting
The area the bird was kept was among trees and the siun was shining through the branches but was being diffused slightly.Equipment
This was taken with a D7200 and a Nikon 300mm f2.8 vr lens.I dont use flash to photograph animals and birds.Inspiration
I know this particular bird quite well and has proven very photogenic in the past. However I had taken a shot of a Red kite at the trust on a previous visit that I liked the composition of so thought I would try the same type of shot on this bird (he is called Orion by the way).Editing
Obviously I converted to mono for this shot but did it in a different way. I used colour fx pro and applied the IR filter then tweaked the settings until I had it how I wanted it. Then I used raw filter to further tweak the shot.In my camera bag
I always carry my D7200 and the 300mm prime. Nowadays I just take that set up and my Tamron macro lens. I also use a manfrotto tripod with a Lensmaster RH2 Gimbal head. The Lensmaster is a fantastic Gimbal and outperforms a lot of Gimbals that are three times its price!Feedback
Try to plan your shot in advance. I knew exactly how I wanted this shot to look and just waited for the bird to look at me and the light was right. It is okay to recreate a shot you have taken in the past as every time you do it you learn to do it a little bit better!
