Location
This photo was taken at the 13th waterhole in the Kgalagadi National Park.Time
During this time of the year there are hundreds of photographers in the park, all trying to get to the animals first. On this morning I was the 3rd car to leave the camp. I wanted to drive down to a area that I knew people spotted leopards on a regular basis. This was my 4th visit to the park and I have never been able to see a leopard in the Kgalagadi. My dad did the drive with me this morning and as we approached one of the waterholes I spotted the leopard crouching behind a dry tree stump. We immediately stopped the car and I managed to get a shot. It wasn't a great shot but it was proof. We just saw our first leopard in the Kgalagadi! I waited a wile for the leopard to come out from behind the tree and it quickly got used to our vehicle and continued on his quest for breakfast. I was lucky to get a series of better shots of this magnificent cat as it hunted. Photo taken on the 19th of November 2015 at 6:37am.Lighting
A few vehicles drove past us as we where waiting for the leopard to come out from its hiding spot behind the tree. This caused the dust created this awesome orange tint against the early morning sun. I just had to wait for the leopard to do a pose.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5300 with a 55-300 kit lens.Inspiration
I love backlight shots of big cats so when I saw the conditions created by the dust and early morning sun I knew I had to try and get the shot.Editing
I am still quite new to photography and the post processing of photos so I cant say that I have used any specific techniques. I did bring out some detail in the shadows and played around with the white balance but other than that I didn't do much.In my camera bag
As I said I am very new to photography so my equipment is basic. I have a Nikon D5300 with a 18-105 and a 55-300 kit lens and I just bought a Sigma 10-20mm F4 wide angle lens and a tripodFeedback
Go out and play! That one image of something amazing could happen anywhere.
