Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of my cousin and his daughter in the park by my house over Canadian Thanksgiving weekend in 2015.

Time

We had been wandering around the park for about an hour, and golden hour was almost over when I snapped this shot.

Lighting

This image was shot during golden hour - no artificial light added at all.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7000 and an 85mm 1.4 lens.

Inspiration

Little Miss Lila is growing up fast, and these moments are something to hold on to. Because they live so far away, I get to see Lila maybe once or twice a year, and I know that if I'm surprised by how big she's getting, her parents are too. Pretty soon, the toddler will grow up into a school aged girl, and photos are the only way we have of documenting her and remembering her as she was in years past.

Editing

The only post-processing done was noise reduction and white balancing.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, I usually tote around my camera, an 85mm 1.8 lens, a 50mm 1.8 lens, a light meter, a speedlight, a set of PocketWizards and a plethora of AA batteries. Some days, I'l bring along a reflector, but not always.

Feedback

Shooting with toddlers is definitely a challenge, but the end result is usually worth it. My advice is to bring along a ton of patience and to chase the light. Knowing your location is also a big plus.
