Location
Photo taken in the Patagonia region of Chile at the Torres Del Paine Park in Chile, South America. There had been a huge storm in the previous days leading up to the photo day and I was happy to see snow on the peak.Time
This was one of the first photos I took on the day. I remember walking on a little pathway in the dark with a headlamp to light my way. By the time I arrived at the water's edge there was very little time before the sun would rise. I set up my camera on a tripod and began to take some test shots to determine the best location for best composition. There were wooden debris in the water and in the sand and I wanted to incorporate the unusual wooden shapes in my composition. I also made sure the moon was in a good place in the sky that would work with my composition of the scene. Once the sun lit the top of the mountain peak, I began to photograph.Lighting
The sun was rising and began to light the peak of the mountain. I was pleased that there was very little wind to disturb the reflection of the mountain in the water. The moon was still fairly high in the sky and I wanted to include that in the photograph. And the light from the moon helped to light the scene but still had some blue night light in the sky.Equipment
This image was taken with a Canon 5D Mark II with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens on a tripod, ISO-400, no flash.Inspiration
I was exploring Torres del Paine Park in Chile from as many vantage points as I could. This mountain peak was so clear due to the air quality. It was remarkable to me and the light on the mountain peak was stunning!Editing
Yes, I use Lightroom. I edited the image in LR by leveling and cropping. I adjusted the highlights down and the shadows up slightly and increased the clarity. In my camera bag
I usually shoot with Nikon D810 and 24-70mm or 70-200mm. But on this day I borrowed a Canon 5D Mark II and a 24-70mm lens. I was amazed at the difference of the image right out of the camera. The image had sharpness that I was not used to. I still love my Nikon camera but I could be happy with that Canon camera and lens.Feedback
The Patagonia region of South America has variable weather. We spent 3 days waiting for the rainy weather to clear. Low-lying clouds were all that we could photograph. We were so happy when the storm passed and we were able to hike to places with vistas like this mountain in Chile. One needs to have patience to wait for the right light and weather, a good parka to protect you in strong winds and a sturdy tripod that can hold your camera steady. Also, you need to hang onto the tripod when the wind gets strong. You also need to be able to walk with a heavy backpack in the dark with a headlamp and hiking boots on a narrow pathway for over an hour to get to this location.
