This photo is of an image in the1996 Native American Calendar, for the month of July. The original painting was made by Carol Theroux, the title of it is “Journey to Womanhood.” One of America's most admired painters of the Native American Indian, Carol Theroux is widely known for the sensitivity and authenticity of her work. Drawing inspiration from her own Cherokee heritage, she portrays the traditional values of Native American life, paying tribute to their noble past in her portraits, collectible plates, and Native American porcelain dolls.

I edited this photo to reflect the statistic 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. That is why my edited rendition of this composition has seven black butterflies and one pink butterfly.

The best way to fight breast cancer is to have a plan that helps you detect the disease in its early stages. Create your Early Detection Plan to receive reminders to do breast self-exams, and schedule your clinical breast exams and mammograms based on your age and health history. When breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 100%* *American Cancer Society
