Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Mac. Faddin Beach, Sabine Pass Texas. I had setup a shoot with this model and asked my local camera club if they would like to join me on photographing a beautiful model. Since it was in early June, our weather here is rather hot. A beach shoot sounded like a perfect plan for this occasion. After discussing the shoot with several members, this location seemed appropriate. It's not too crowded with people.

Time

I wanted to do this shoot late in the afternoon. This time of year, we have long days during the summer months. This particular image was taken at a 4:38 P.M on June 3, 2015.

Lighting

Being late in the afternoon in June, the sun's rays produce some spectacular warm colors. It was a partly cloudy day when I shot this image. Waiting for a cloud cover to block the harsh sun gave me the even light across her face that I was looking for. I shot several images of her lying in surf.

Equipment

My favorite camera to use is a Nikon D3s with a nikkor 70-200mm VR1 2.8 lens. When on a location shoot, I usually bring light modifiers such as a 5 in 1 reflector, diffuser that is at lease 40 plus inches. I also use a magic light which is similar to the ice light which can put the catch light in a models eyes.

Inspiration

Anytime I'm on a shoot working with experienced models that knows how to walk or move their body and you have to give them very little direction as too what you are looking for, it's a plus for you. I tell the novice shooters if they are on a shoot like this, you better start looking through your viewfinder and take the shot. This model is doing what they trained themselves to do. And our particular model did exactly that. She moved with grace while lying down in the surf. Squatting down in the beach surf was also a must. I wanted to get eye level with this model.

Editing

this particular image was taken in color. After seeing the raw image on my computer screen, I like to check to see if I change it to B&W and see what the results look like. The only other thing that I did was crop it down to just her face and hands. I am not a photographer who likes to change up an image with a lot of post processing. Now I do clean up a person's skin if any blemishes are usually gone say in a couple of weeks. If they are permanent, then I leave them. I use a free image program to work on all of my photos. I have been criticized for not using LR or photoshop from the camera club that I belong to but I have won a lot of first places with the images that shown in competitions and made a few dollars to boot.

In my camera bag

On a photoshoot with models, one of my bags carries my 70-200mm 2.8 nikkor lens. Also I carry an 85 1.4mm nikkor lens, and a 24-70 2.8 nikkor lens. I also carry a Sekonic L358 light meter. It helps when you have difficult lighting to work with. as far as batteries. I carry extra batteries for my camera. I have seen people come to a shoot and pull out their camera and when they try to take the shot nothing happens. Their camera battery was dead. Be prepared.

Feedback

Know the time of year that you are wanting to do a shoot in. Fall or winter, the colors are different than late spring or summer. ask the model if they have any experience with modeling. A lot of models have had a little or none at all. That's okay. Take the time to work with them and direct them. They will try their best to make the image work for you. Be respectful!
