Location
This photo was taken at a local park where I love to spend my summers observing wildlife and insects in their flower gardens. I am a self taught photographer that never noticed the beauty of insects until I got my macro lens. Photography really opened my eyes to all the beautiful small things that most people overlook.Time
This picture was taken on a dreary fall day around 4 in the evening. The lighting wasn't very dramatic nor was the day an exceptionally beautiful one but the flowers still hold beautiful little secrets such as these.Lighting
With natural lighting I try to avoid harsh overhead light. I avoid artificial light and flash as it scares the insects I am trying to capture. I try to be as respectful of their world as possible which means getting into creative positions to avoid the glare of the sun. Patience is key.Equipment
This was shot with my canon 60d and a 100mm lens. I prefer to handhold for these shots as I do not employ any method of stunning the insects. Again, I try to be very respectful of the natural world and lighting and thus, flash is never used for shots of insects in nature.Inspiration
I was observing the ants crawling over flowers and their diligent preparation for the coming warm months. I felt the need to capture their delicate beauty and age old wisdom.Editing
There is very little post processing done to this image other than a small spotlight action to make the subject pop.In my camera bag
I never go anywhere without my 100mm, my 70-200 and and my lens hood. I also carry my expodisc and a x2 teleconverter.Feedback
Be patient! Insects and arachnids have a mind of their own and they travel fast. Get down on their level and observe them. Observe how they move and don't be afraid of capturing many shots in the attempt to get that perfect image you love! Practice with your focusing a LOT. I use a lot of back button focus and manual focus when shooting macros. You need to practice until you know exactly where the buttons are on your camera because often you have a split second to get the shot you want.
