Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo just after launching our balloon called "Zipper" in Mckinney Texas. We launched together with a couple of other pilots in the Morning.

Time

It was morning, because that is the time of day best for calm winds to fly a hot air balloon.

Lighting

I usually like outdoor shooting in the evening, but in Ballooning, mornings can really be a great time to shoot. The sky has beautiful and soft colors.

Equipment

Handheld Canon Rebel

Inspiration

I realized after they launched out of the low bowl ( protected from the wind) that they immediately descended after going over the hill. I knew they were headed to Splash and Dash in the water. (Gently touching the surface of the water with the bottom of the basket). So I ran up the hill to get this shot. This photo was taken after they touched the water, which you can see below the balloon.

Editing

I didn't do much post processing. Maybe a little light balancing.

In my camera bag

A couple of lenses, and a UV filter. A small tripod, but I usually shoot on the go and spontaneously rather than using a tripod. I added a remote Flash recently but haven't learned all the settings yet! ;-)

Feedback

Composing your shot with the camera frame. I look for the image I want to capture, without cropping. Being inspired in the moment for opportunities to capture a unique situation. Waiting for the subject to arrange, as in the balloons, waiting until they move into positions I like. Since they are all moving, I look for the shot to come together.
