Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from inside Moab's Arches National Park in Utah. It was during the spring and the nearby snowy mountain range stood out being starkly different than the landscape inside the park. This looks like two images that were combined, but this is shot as is. The peaks in the background are just 20 miles south of Moab are the La Sal Mountains, which are part of Manti-La Sal National Forest. Attaining heights of nearly 13,000 feet, these alpine mountains are the second highest mountain range in Utah.

Time

I believe this was late afternoon, having traveled from the state of Washington back toward Texas which is home.

Lighting

Natural lighting in afternoon, no added light used.

Equipment

This photo was taken by an Olympus camera, a few cameras ago. I have almost exclusively invested in Canon lenses over the last 15 years. Having used the Canon Rebel, a 5D and now a 70D. I liked the Rebel for traveling due to its light weight. I did a lot of hot air ballooning and traveling in Europe.

Inspiration

This is probably the most unique photo I took inside the park. Obviously the arches are not depicted in this photo but this was one that gained the most interest that I posted on Viewbug.

Editing

Slight post processing to get the contrast right in sky and distant mountains.

In my camera bag

Canon 70 D, I shoot with an 18-135 EFS zoom lense. I find it very versatile to shoot landscapes as well as more detailed shots for birds and delicate flowers and architectural details. I also keep a Phottix Mitros + Flash ETTL unit for photographing indoors and adding light for outdoor subjects where shadows would be present in full sunlight.

Feedback

Just look for a perspectives that stand out from the landscape. Frame the photo up, looking for all details that you want to capture in the final shot. I look for shots that highlight the natural landscape, without man-made distracting items.
