Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Bakkagerði, in Borgarfjörður Eystri, Iceland.

Time

This photo was taken at noon in an early August day in 2015. I travelled to Bakkagerði from the East Fjords. It was a very foggy day and I though I couldn't see the puffins that day. Fortunatelly, the fog wasn't as heavy in Bakkagerði as it was during the trip. I spent a few hours trying to photograph the fast puffins while flying that day. It was cold, foggy and I had to clean my lenses before every shot, but it was worth it.

Lighting

It was a very dark and foggy day. I tried to shot with wide apertures and ISO as low as possible so I could catch the puffins flying with short exposures and not so much noise.

Equipment

I shot this photo with my Canon 1200d and Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM.

Inspiration

Since I started to prepare my holidays in Iceland I met this funny and beautiful creatures. I made a research to know where they can be found in Iceland and the best locations to photograph them. I knew they can be also found in Ireland, where I live, but I had never seen any before, so I tried to take as many photos and as close as I can. I love how clumpsy and beautiful puffins are.

Editing

I used Lightroom to increase a bit the exposure, as the day was very very dark. I didn't do anything else.

In my camera bag

I normally have my camera and three lenses: the standard Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS II, a telephoto zoom Canon EF-S 55-250 mm IS STM and Canon 50mm f/1.8. Also, UV filters to protect all my lenses, a polarizer filter and ND8 filter for long exposures and my tripod.

Feedback

There are two wonderful locations in Iceland to photograph puffins at a very close distance. One is Latrabjarg cliffs, in the Westfjords: not very accesible, at the end of a long gravel road. The cliffs are a wonderful sight and you can photograph puffins at very short distances (and almost touch them!). I would recommend to be careful there, the wind is very strong!! The other location is where this photo was taken, Bakkagerði, in East Iceland. Puffins only stay in Iceland during breeding season in summer.
