This picture was taken in my living room. When the weather is bad, I try to practice my skills in my apartment. I have to say my cat is always a subject of choice in this situation !Time
This photo was taken during the afternoon. It was one of those boring November days when you don't want to step outside.Lighting
At that time I didn't own an external flash and I didn't want to use the frontal flash of my camera. Thus, I had to work the cheap DIY way : Use the lights that were available in the living room and try to position them the best I could. Overall, I am happy with the warm light these lamps gave to the photo. Notice that the reflections in the eyes are from the windows that are behind me, and not from the lamps.Equipment
For this photo I use a Nikon D90 with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G lens. I took the photograph was taken handheld.Inspiration
When I take pictures of my cat, I always like to put her in different situations or places and observe the way she behave. Usually, I know that if I put her in place she has never been, like the basket on the picture, I will have a lot of opportunities to have a good picture : She will spend time looking and analysing the place, then she will smell and rub her face on pretty much every surface! This gives a couple of minute with a lot of cat action!Editing
For this picture, only a few post-processing was involved : basically, I had to denoise a little bit, since the picture was taken at ISO-1600. Then I sharpened slightly, and finally I accentuated the colors, light and contrast. In my camera bag
Since this picture, my gear evolved. I now use a Nikon D7100, which is a great upgrade from the D90. This D7100 is always mounted with a Nikkor 10-24 mm f/3.5-4.5G ED. I also carry two others lens in my bag. The choice of these lenses is circumstantial. It will be 2 of these lenses : Nikkor 35 mm f/1.8G, Nikkor 55-300 mm F/4.5-5.6G ED VR and Nikkor Micro 60 mm f/2.8G ED. I also carry filters: The Lee Big Stopper and a Lee graduated ND 0.9. Absolutely essential for landscape photography ! And recently I added a circular polarizer from B+W.Feedback
One trick to obtain good pictures with your pet is to put your pet in front of something new, or in a new place, a new situation... Animals are usually curious. If you put them in front of something new, you only have to wait a few minutes (sometimes a few seconds!) to obtain interesting action. Your pet will observe, hesitate, and finally interact with the new place/object.
