Location
'Morro Rock Sniffing the Sunset' was taken in Morro Bay, California. We live in a holiday destination that is visited by many people and is a quaint little fishing town. 'The Rock' is a volcanic chute left after years of geographical erosion. Also there was excavation and fortunately they stopped in time to realize this is one of the nine sisters, sacred according to the Chumash indians.Time
I was out on a walk with my wife and her girlfriend who had come over from Wisconsin. Just one of the grand sunsets that draws lots of people to 'The Rock' is captured here. Mostly there are surfers on this side, and I have some shots of them too from the same evening. Nice thing is the light gets better and better and the colors are breath-taking.Lighting
From all the shots I took that evening and on many other occasions the color in the sky and the light dancing on the water give the whole image a feel of wow! The head of the rock looks like a sleeping rhino. I wished to relate why so many people come to Morro Bay and enjoy the sun-sets in October and November when we get the clearest skies.Equipment
Camera: SONY ILCE-7 - Aperture: f/4.5 ISO: 800 - Shutter Speed: 1/1250 - Focal Length: 28/1 I shot this handheld with my Sony 28 - 70 mm lensInspiration
Teressena and Heidi were in some of the previous shots looking longing or forlorn at the sunset, yet the light kept getting better and I kept taking shots. Some had gulls, and curlews in them and yet this clear and crisp image just blew me away. The true inspiration is born out of gratitude, to live in a holiday destination where we get to go to the beach whenever we choose and bask in the beauty that surrounds us.Editing
In Lightroom I scaled up the clarity a bit, this is one that just came out pretty darn good!In my camera bag
I moved to the Sony mirrorless A7 a while back and love the camera for many reasons, the lens is a very normal sony 28 - 70mm and proof that a great image can be born in any moment when we just keep on enjoying the process. I do pack another telephoto sigma 70 - 300mm and a Tamron beast 150 - 600mm The latter proofed to be great in Costa Rica last year with all the Birds, gotta love it. I do carry a Zomei tripod and love the versatility of it.Feedback
I have a good number of shots from that evening and many times I have the patience to stay with my objective and get a good shot. I do recall that I played with my settings a lot that evening and looking at the shots before and after this one, saw they did not have the blue cast I like in this one. I'd say dare to be creative and you might surprise yourself. A good photographer friend said once you feel great about a subject, that love and feeling will be encapsulated in the image. This is what enhances the image to bring out it's inherent beauty.
