Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my back porch. The mantis was hanging out on a spray bottle that I had outside. I was able to go get my camera and take a few photos.

Time

I don't even remember what time of day it was. I just happened to notice the Mantis and had the time to snap a few photos.

Lighting

The natural light was a bit dark and I decided to use the pop up flash. It worked as it lit the Mantis nice and the background came out dark.

Equipment

I used my Canon 50D with the Canon 100-400 mm lens. I had on my Canon 500D close up lens that enables beautiful close ups. I used the pop up flash and hand held.

Inspiration

Praying Mantis are very interesting insects and the coloration was also eye catching.

Editing

I used Lightroom to bring out the best in the photograph.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a 28-105mm, 10-22mm, and a 50mm prime in my bag. These lenses usually cover most if not all situations I usually shoot. I sometimes pull out the heavy 100-400mm if I know I need that to get up close. I have also been carrying some extension tubes and a Canon 500D close up lens for doing macros.

Feedback

Pay attention to the details. If I hadn't noticed the Mantis, I wouldn't of got some nice photos. Also, there always is time to grab a quick photo. Also, don't be afraid to fill the frame with your subject.
