Bullying is the use of force or coercion to abuse or intimidate others. The behavior can be habitual and involve an imbalance of social or physical power. A bullying culture can develop in any context in which human beings interact with each other. This includes school, family, the workplace, home, and neighborhoods. In the 2000s and 2010s, a cultural movement against bullying gained popularity in the English-speaking world. The first National Bullying Prevention Week was conceived of in Canada in 2000 by Canadian educator and anti-bullying activist Bill Belsey. The charity Act Against Bullying was formed in the UK in 2003. In 2006, National Bullying Prevention Month was declared in the United States. The Suicide of Phoebe Prince in 2010 brought attention to the issue in Massachusetts, and sparked reforms in state education. The It Gets Better Project was started in 2010 to combat gay teen suicides, and Lady Gaga announced the Born This Way Foundation in partnership with Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society in 2011. A 2012 paper from the Berkman Center, "An Overview of State Anti-Bullying Legislation and Other Related Laws," notes that, as of January 2012, 48 U.S. states had anti-bullying laws, though there is wide variation in their strength and focus. Sixteen states acknowledge that bullies often target their victims based on "creed or religion, disability, gender or sex, nationality or national origin, race, and sexual orientation." Each of the 16 employs a wide array of additional parameters, the paper notes, ranging from age and weight to socioeconomic status. Of the 38 states that have laws encompassing electronic or "cyberbullying" activity, 32 put such offenses under the broader category of bullying and six states define this type of offense separately, the authors report.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken indoor, in my house.

Time

It was around 19.00 o clock.

Lighting

I believe that the most important thing to consider as a portrait photographer is the quality of the light you will be shooting in. I wanted to promote a dramatic look. I used one flash from one side of the face. That means that technically one part of the face is in light and the other is in shadow.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D 7000 dslr with an 50mm f/1.8. Aslo one flash with softbox was involved.

Inspiration

I was looking to give expression and dramatic look to this portrait. I was trying to explain to my eight-year old son what bullying is. By presenting the face partly in light and partly in shadow, I wanted to show that people who are bullied often feel alone, side-lined and miserable. It is as if a part of them is living in the shadows. A face fully in the light however expresses joy, happiness and acceptance.

Editing

I made a post-processing. My personal satisfaction comes from taking the image into Photoshop and re-interpreting it in a way that makes it feel more like a painting. After I develop the raw file I changing the brightness/contrast, adding vignettes, and textures using the power of frequency separation retouching. Also one of the most effective part was the process of the eyes.

In my camera bag

The first thing I always pack is my Nikon 50 mm f/1.8 prime. The second one is the Sigma 105 mm f/2.8 prime and the Sigma 24 mm f/1.4 prime. Also the Nikon 18-105 mm f/3.5-5.6 is a good solution for making it possible to shoot most subjects with just one lens. Every lens have it purpose.

Feedback

It's good to have in mind the 6 steps. The location to take the photo, consider our lighting, to set up our scene, to pose the subject, “Break” the Shot and take the shot is the key to achieve perfect portrait expression.
