Location
This photo was taken near Laurel Bed Lake in Saltville, Virginia. The lake is at the top of some mountains and you have to go up some very narrow and steep roads to reach it but its worth it. I took this photo on the way to the lake.Time
I got up early in the morning on October 12, 2015 and met up with a friend who had lived in Southwest Virginia her whole life. She knew of a bunch of waterfalls and rivers that were close to us. It was my 2nd time that I had a chance to experience fall since I had only lived in South Carolina until 2 years ago. We drove up near a lake over really narrow and steep mountain roads. Around 10 am we stopped at this river on the way up to the lake and I loved how the trees were bending to hang over the water. I positioned my tripod on a few rocks and I stood beside it using my remote. I could have stood their all day just enjoying the view.Lighting
It was a partly cloudy day and the sun was already pretty high in the sky. When I took this photo, there was a big cloud that covered the sun giving an even lighting to the photo.Equipment
This photo was taken with my Nikon D7000, Nikon 18-200mm f/3.6-5.6, a cheap sunpak tripod and a remote.Inspiration
Living in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains over the past 3 years has really made me appreciate fall. I love when the leaves change colors and how vibrant they are. Its quickly become my favorite time of year and I wanted to be able to capture what it is like since we'll probably only be here another year.Editing
I really didn't need to do much to this photo. I boosted the contrast a little, upped the oranges and yellows a little bit and that was basically it.In my camera bag
When I took this photo I only had 2 lenses: a 50mm f/1.8 and a 18-200 f/3.6-5.6 as well as a D7000. I've since bought a D700 and a 50mm 1.2. My bag always has spare batteries, a polarizing filter, as well a squeaky dog toy, which has become one of my most useful tools. Its great to use when photographing little kids.Feedback
Be patient and experiment. This was my first time taking photos of moving water and while there is still room for improvement, I'm happy with my attempt. I took a lot of photos with a variety of settings, trying to find what was the best. The settings for this photo was ISO 100, f/29, SS 1/2sec at 42mm. Also don't be afraid to get wet! I actually fell in the river after I slipped on some rocks setting everything up. I was able to keep my equipment dry but I was soaked and ended up with a few bruises as well as some great photos
