Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in St. Andrews in Scotland on a very spontaneous road trip with friends.

Time

It's one of my favorite photos from that trip. It was typical afternoon April day in Scotland; it had rained only a few minutes before the skies were full of clouds, and the sun was slowly peeking out.

Lighting

I was intrigued by the part of the cathedral in the back. The gate was the main entrance, and it stretched beautifully into the skies. The gate also gave me the idea to use it as the framing of the picture. The light was quickly escaping again with the sun hiding behind the clouds.

Equipment

I used my trusty old Nikon D50 with 18-55mm kit lenses, and my knees for balance.

Inspiration

The ruins were the overall interesting place, and I was circling the set looking for excellent views. The gate was first to catch my eye, and when I noticed the back of the church I got the idea to frame it with the gate.

Editing

Yes, the picture needed some work as the clouds in the back were almost invisible, I post process only in Lightroom, and it works on highlights and shadows.

In my camera bag

I've recently changed from Nikon D50 to Nikon D7100, so that is my main body at the moment, I use kit lens 18-55mm from Nikkor, and depending on where I'm going I have a 55-300mm Nikkor and a 70mm Sigma or 50mm Pencolar. I also carry ND and polarized filters. Sometimes also the tripod.

Feedback

Look closely through all windows and openings, also in this particular case, change perspective - go down on your knees, move back a little bit and you will get a perfect shot.
