Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Ketteringham Hall, in Norfolk, the former home of the original Lotus racing group, a truely spectacular building in amazing private grounds.

Time

The shot was taken in the evening, 20:51hrs, it was dark enough for me to wish I had a torch in my pocket, and dark enough for the bride and groom to get a little practice.

Lighting

The lighting around the building was amazing, either side of the imposing wooden door were two windows lit from within, the sumptuous coach light, gently inviting your eyes to gaze to that door, and the natural frame for my couple. I used a small speedlight on a tripod with a flashbender to relief Amy and Rory from the door, took a long step back, deep breath, and pressed the shutter release. I then pressed it again just to make sure, then shouted to Amy and Rory, you can breathe now!!

Equipment

Taken on a Canon 5d MkIII with a 24-70 f2.8L lens, The image was shot on a one second exposure, f/5.6, at ISO 800, using shutter priority. I used a manfrotto tripod, a Yongnuo wireless TTL trigger, and Yongnuo speedlight.

Inspiration

I was looking for a way to show off the amazing building, and the beautiful bride and groom, the light went down behind the building, on what was a cool day, I wanted something special for the couple, the kind of art work that most people would gladly have on their wall, for them the gem is that they are the couple in the image. I always saw this image as a black and white romantic moment, a literal capture.

Editing

Post work was completed using capture one pro for the RAW edit, I then took this into Photoshop CC, and used the Nik Silvereffects pro to convert it to black and white. I finished with a little HDR tone mapping on the brickwork eitherside of the door, before adding a vignette blurr, to further draw in the eye.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 5D Mk III, a Canon 1D MkIII, a 24-70 f/2.8L(2), 70-200 f/2.8L IS (1) and 17-40 f/4.5 L. I have 2 Yongnuo 568EXII flashes, a Yongnou 565EXII flash, a Nissin Di866 MKII pro and a canon 550EX flash, I have sufficient remotes switches for TTL with all the flashes and two Yongnuo transmitters, that allow me to control what fires when and where, and with what strength. I always have gels, flashbender's, and a light sphere. I always travel with at least 3 tripods a joby tripod and a set of steps that convert into a carrying truck.

Feedback

Play.. Take loads of shots, learn where you have captured the moment, take it to your next shoot. Start in program mode, then learn how each of the modes help you, before plunging into manual, it will help you get cracking images quicker without getting disheartened... Have fun, have more fun, be prepared to laugh with your subject, put them at ease and they will honestly shine, you just then have to capture the light...and all the time have fun
