This is all that's left of an old turbine that would have brought the water up to an old miner's sluice.
As gold is heavier than the dirt and the other rocks that would pass through the sluice, the gold would be all that remained in the bottom of the sluice once the water washed everything else away.
Imagine the excitement when these old miner's discovered they had actually found gold.
I wonder if there is still more gold to discover in the little river bed that lies only feet away from this old piece of machinery? Perhaps someone should go check it out, because, you never really know until you actually dig it up...
