This photo was taken on Park Point Beach in Duluth, Minnesota along the shore of Lake Superior.Time
This was take in late September around 6pm. I had been waiting to see if balloons were going to launch at a nearby festival but the wind wasn't cooperating so I ended up exploring something else nearby.Lighting
This was an early fall evening in late September, given the time of year and the cloud cover it provided a very pleasing soft natural light.Equipment
This was shot on a D800 with a 16-35/F4 lens. Using a Gitzo tripod with a Really Right Stuff ball head. ISO50, 16mm, 1/6 @ f/22Inspiration
It was a windy evening in Duluth, clouds were starting to move in pushed by heavy winds which gave a more dramatic appearance to the sky. Trying to find a composition I came upon this large chunk of driftwood on the beach. I liked the texture of it and positioned my self to have it point towards the clouds flowing over Lake Superior.Editing
Originally captured in color I did some basic tweaks in Lightroom to the shadows, contrast and clarity. From there I brought it into the Nik Effects Silver Efx2 software. I used that to convert to black and white. I further adjust the lighting and contrast to bring out more details in the photo. In my camera bag
For landscape work I always start with my D800, Gitzo tripod, and RRS ball head. I tend to bring a variety of lens starting with the Nikon 16-35/F4, the Nikon 50/F1.4, and my Nikon 70-200/F2.8 just in case I needed the telephoto compression of a long lens. I also bring along a much with my VU filter adapter and several VU filters: neutral density, split grads, and a polarizer.Feedback
Fall in Duluth is different day by day and being along Lake Superior there is always something interesting to photograph. Venturing out on Park Point Beach at dawn and dusk typically leaves you with gorgeous light, interesting clouds, its them up to you find a compositions that speaks to you. From the sandy beach to the crashing waves lots of options abound.
