Looked outside my window to find one of the most breathtaking sunrises I have ever seen.

Was lucky enough to catch the sunset at this North Carolina lake. The reflection of the clouds made for a particularly lovely photo.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken when I stumbled upon this great park/waterfall spot in Virginia (appropriately named 'Great Falls') while exploring the state after recently moving to the area.

Time

This was taken around mid-day. I was hiking in the area for most of the day and was exhausted. I remember walking up to this view and suddenly feeling re-energized and just being in awe of what I saw before me.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect. The sun was exactly where I wanted it to be. I wanted to exhibit just how huge this waterfall was. I wanted the depth of the photo to give justice to how far along this waterfall stretched. And the lighting of this photo did just that.

Equipment

Just my Nikon D5300 24.2 MP SLR and myself.

Inspiration

The spirit of the day was definitely that of exploration and adventure and just sheer fascination with what was all around me. This view and thus this photo were exemplary to that spirit. An adventurous spirit is what gave the want to explore and I was definitely fascinated with what was around me when I came about Great Falls.

Editing

I used some post photo-processing for corrections to make sure there wasn't any sort of glare/haziness in the picture, and the colors were as vibrant and obvious as they really were in real life.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D5300 either in my tiny exploring backpack or around my neck. I also always have a small little wooden block in my bag, just in case I want to take some steady shots and I don't want to haul my tripod around. Those two plus some snacks and I'm good to go.

Feedback

If you're trying to capture a landscape photo, try to capture a picture that reflects how you're feeling at that moment about what you're seeing. If you're really recognizing the depth of the scene, the size, the vibrant colors, the way the sunlight reflects on the water etc. then try to capture those things. That's what helps me the most in achieving the shots I want for landscape/nature photos.
