Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken of the highway crossing the center of the South Island of New Zealand after leaving Mt Cook National Park and heading to the east (Pacific Ocean) coast to drive down to the city of Dunedin. I guessed that we were near the town of Twizel where this was taken.

Time

This was taken late afternoon in mid-April during their Fall season.

Lighting

It was partly overcast creating nice diffused light.

Equipment

I used a rented Nikon full frame D600 DSLR with a rented 16-35mm f4 lens on my Really Right Stuff tripod and ball head.

Inspiration

The beautiful fall colors, reflection in the pond and the drifting fog in the hills captured my interest in this photo.

Editing

The most important thing I did in post-processing was to import this image into Photoshop after some editing in Adobe Lightroom and to use a 'radial blur' filter after carefully capturing the sky. I applied the same filter in the water reflection (reversing the direction of the blur) to try and match the sky after selecting the water. Many photographers THOUGHT I had simply used a long shutter speed on a windy day to get this effect.

In my camera bag

I normally have a Nikon D750 with a Nikkor 24-120mm F4 kit lens, a Nikkor 16-35mm F4 wide zoom, and a Nikkor 70-200mm F4 Telezoom lens.

Feedback

Always shoot when the water is very calm (usually early morning around dawn or just before sunset) and with partly cloudy skies to help filter/soften the light. Some color in the foliage to contrast the sky color is also nice.
