Location
Milford Sound in Fjordland National Park on the South Island of New ZealandTime
Late afternoon/early evening as the sun was setting.Lighting
As the sun set, there was some color in the sky but not much and then it began to get dark. There were some photographers attending a workshop there who decided to leave at that moment, but a friend and I stayed to see a 'second show' of color from the sunset which was incredibly brilliant compared to the first show and lasted much longer.Equipment
Nikon D600, Nikon 16-35mm F4 wide-zoom lens, Really Right Stuff tripod/ball headInspiration
I knew that Milford Sound was a very iconic location in New Zealand but few photos had been taken at sunset AND low tide in the Fall until this one. Seeing the small stream left behind by the receding tide in a classic 's-curve', made that location to be the perfect spot to lead the eye into the scene.Editing
I used Adobe Lightroom for post-processing to crop the image slightly and adjust tones to show the brilliant color in the sky of the sunset as I remembered it. I also brought out the shadow details in the hills and mountains surrounding Milford Sound. In my camera bag
I normally have now a Nikon D750, with Nikon lenses 70-200mm F4, 16-35mm F4, and a 24-120 F4. I also keep a headlamp, remote cable release, 2 spare batteries, and plenty of extra SD storage cards.Feedback
STAY well after sunset as the best light may occur after you think the 'show' is over!
