Location
This photo was taken in a flower bed at my home in Virginia.Time
It was a very warm, late summer afternoon and the butterflies were numerous on the many blossoms. Tracking butterflies as they flutter from one plant to another without crushing the flowers was an exercise in balancing my natural clumsiness and not dropping the camera. I didn't want to crush the flowers even if they were in my flower bed.Lighting
The lighting is natural sunlight.Equipment
This was taken handheld with a Nikon D3100 and a Sigma 70-300 mm telephoto lens.Inspiration
I love butterflies so it was natural for me to chase after them in the flower bed. I still chase after them if I can.Editing
There was some post-processing done on this in Picasa for clarity and sharpness as I didn't have Lightroom at the time this was taken. I didn't realize the butterfly had its tongue out until after that was completed. In my camera bag
Currently, my camera pack consists of a Nikon D7200, a Sigma 18-300 mm, a Tokina 100 mm macro, a NIkon 35 mm, and the NIkon 18-55 mm lens. I also keep handy in its own bag a Sigma 150-600 mm contemporary telephoto.Feedback
My advice to anyone who is new to photography is to practice, practice, practice. When someone says that they want to go to manual mode because they've only been doing auto or selected scene, I advise them to study the photos that they have downloaded, look at the settings the camera chose and then go and replicate them using the manual settings. It may not come out correct the first few times, but then there you have another reason to go shoot and learn more.
