I had just watched a documentary on the # of suicides each year off the Golden Gate Bridge. Surprisingly we were activated to Monterey, Ca a few months later, which gave me a chance to see it in person for the first time. What a crazy bridge to walk across. I commend the men, many years ago who built this slender without all the technologies of today! One of the coolest places I've visited!!!

Behind The Lens

Location

In San Francisco, California We were being stationed in Monterey, Ca and my husband and I were visiting to find a place to live. We visited the bridge after watching a documentary about the many sucicides that happen at the Golden Gate Bridge every year. It was a sad but inspiring documentary.

Time

Mid- Morning, after this foggy layer had lifted from the water....

Lighting

Surprisingly there was no fog at that time of day, which is rare, especially for the Golden Gate Bridge. We had seen some fog earlier on the pier and decided to wait a bit and see if it would clear out. It did and we were able to walk across the bridge and capture some great photos. This one being my personal favorite.

Equipment

Believe it or not, this was taken back in 2009/2010. Back then I used to use the basic and not very expensive Kodak or Nikon digital camera. It was whatever was out that year, nothing more than a 10.0 or 12.0 mps. I’m sure now I would be able to capture a much more detailed and vibrant picture with my newly purchased Canon EOS Rebel T5 with detachable lens.

Inspiration

The view of the area around us and the monstrosity of the structure. It looks amazing in a photo, but to come upon it in person, is like something from another planet. It’s huge and amazing. You just look up and realize you’re a teeny tiny ant compared to this giant structure. Then to think about how old it is and wonder how they were able to construct such a thing back then, is something I continue to wonder about. Not only was I inspired by the beauty and the Amazingness of the bridge, but I will as inspired by the documentary I had seen just a week earlier about the suicides that happen there every year. How someone must feel when they walk along the bridge, the same path and same sights I was seeing, what were thinking as they stood there, so high up in the air and looked down into the water. The same spot I might have been standing, the same view pointing down. What was going on that was so horrible that they thought jumping from this very spot was a better way out than continuing on the bridge and going home. It was just surreal to know they saw the same things I saw, their point of view from the bridge was the same view that I was seeing. It’s just so crazy to be there and think, feel these things.

Editing

No, not really.

In my camera bag

My cell phone camera. If I have nothing else, at least I have my cell phone to capture things quickly in the moment. I also like to carry with me in my car or bag, another smaller digital camera. Usually my small Nikon coolpix s3700 or my Nikon coolpix P500 which is a larger Nikon with much better zoom options. I just a larger, multi lense Canon EOS rebel T5....I’m still learning all the settings and options, but this is what I use for taking good personal close ups and pictures of people. I’ve got an array of options and I just can’t stop purchasing cameras. I would also have to say I never leave home without at least 10 SD cards for memory and extra batteries. You always have to have extra batteries and extra storage. It’s a must when you are out there capturing life’s moments and layouts on camera. I’ve always loved cameras and pictures. As a kid who grew up in the 90’s, I owned a Kodak 35mm camera that I had to turn in the film and wait a few days for my pictures. Not knowing what I would find when they were developed. Back then, you took a picture and hoped it was great!!! Digital is SO much better....you have a chance to look and adjust if needed.

Feedback

Not really.....practice, practice, practice. Your best shot will happen when you’re not even expecting it. You’ll find your diamond in the rough.....and it’ll be a treasure you’ll keep forever!!!
