The common name of this striking eight-legged hunter is disappointingly unimaginative: black-and-yellow argiope. Yellow garden spider is no better, and neither is yellow garden argiope. Golden orb-weaver is a little more dramatic, and writing spider is just plain fun. That last name is a bit of a mystery, though, until you turn your head sideways and look at the thick, zig-zagging threads running down the radius of the spider's web. Looks a little like writing, doesn't it?
