The Great Egret glides among the shadowed cypress trees of Caddo Lake like a wraith in the night. I have loved these fierce looking but wary birds since I first started to really pay attention to birds, which was around my senior year of high school. They are so wary of the presence of people that I usually am unable to get close enough to one with my camera to get a good shot before it flies away. Not so at Caddo Lake. I was almost giddy with how close I was able to get, though it took climbing into a canoe with three other people and sitting right on the bottom in the middle, unable to see straight ahead for the person in front of me and wearing the most constrictive and cumbersome life jacket ever. I know it would have kept me from drowning but you'd think they'd make them a little easier to move your head in.
