It's fall, the air is crisp and my hands scream for gloves. I'm bundled in down jacket that makes me feel huge and clunky, and the chill still finds the way under every layer I have on and bits me. It's fall. Many people retreated to the comfort of their heated houses. It's fall, my favorite time to be outside.

Behind The Lens
Location
Japanese Garden, Portland ORTime
This shot was captured in the early morning, just minutes after the garden opened for the day. I chose to shoot in the morning to ensure the correct light for the scene (direct sunshine later in the day would wash out the vibrant colors) and also I hoped to catch the tree during the period of morning stillness to prevent motion blur in the leaves that a breeze would produce.Lighting
The scene is fully lit by natural light and to capture its beauty I knew I needed a diffused light on either an early morning or an overcast day.Equipment
This photo was captured with Canon Rebel T1i mounted on a Wellborn tripod. No filters were needed.Inspiration
I think it's not a far stretch to say that this is one of the most photographed trees in Pacific Northwest. I simply wanted to have a shot of it in my portfolio as well. IEditing
I dropped highlights and opened the shadows a little to bring out the details under the tree and in the darker areas of the branches. In my camera bag
My current set up includes: Camera: Nikon D750 Lenses: Nikkor 24-70 mm, Nikkor 16-35 mm, Rokinon 14 mm Filters: Formatt Hitech Firecrest 3 stops, 10 stops, 16 stops, Formatt Hitech Grad ND 3 stops, W+B Polarizer Tripod: Wellborn Remote: Vello Wireless Shutter Boss Misc: extra memory cards, lens pen, shower capFeedback
There is only a limited amount of tripods allowed in the garden at any particular time. Come early to secure a tripod permit and be prepared to share the location with many other photographers.
