Behind The Lens

Location
The photo was taken in Spain, in a lovely town called Santiago de la Ribera, that sits on the shores of the Mar Menor.
Time
I looked out of my window and saw a storm approaching on the sky. It was just an hour before sunset, so I quickly jumped into my car and drove down to the beach. It was lightning already in the far distence. Luckily i still had enough time to take pictures before it started to rain.
Lighting
The colours of the sunset and the dramatic light of the storm really helped to make this photo. Without such conditions the picture wouldn't have been as interesting.
Equipment
I used my Nikon D600 with the Nikon 16-35mm f4 lens. Since this photo is an exposure of 178 secondes I had to use my Sirui tripod. To be able to make such a long exposure i used my Lee Big Stopper and to darken the sky another Lee 0.9 soft grad filter.
Inspiration
I love this pier and have been there several times. I made a lot of sunrise and sunset shots by there but never got lucky with the clouds. I always wanted to capture it in more dramatic conditions, so this was the perfect day for that. After taking a few pictures with faster shutter speed i noticed that the wind is picking up, so decided to make a long exposure to add movement to the clouds. When i saw the result on my camera screen i was blown away!
Editing
I did some simple raw adjustments in lightroom, such as taking the highlights down, pulling up the shadows, lens correction, noise reduction and pre-sharpen the file. I decided to leave some of the blue color cast of the Big Stopper, cause i think it adds even more drama to the frame. I finished the photo in photoshop pushing out more details of the clouds and the wood. I also added more light on the pier to make it more interesting.
In my camera bag
When i go out to take landscape pictures i always have in my bag my Nikon D600 and the follwing lenses: Nikon 16-35mm f4, Nikon 24mm f3.5 pc-e, Tokina 105mm f2.8 macro. I use Lee filters and always have a landscape polarizer, a set of soft and hard grad filters, a big stopper and a coral filter with me. For every shot i take i use a Sirui M-3004 tripod and a Sirui K-30X ball head, which is a very sturdy set and works fine in all weather conditions. I also have 2 sets of yongnuo remote shutter trigger in my bag and a rain cover for the camera.
Feedback
I think stormy and rainy weather can give amazing details to your photos, so go out and capture that dramatic sky! Composition is one of the most important part of the image,a well built picture can grab the attention of people. Try to practice with different angles and include interesting foregrounds in the picture.
