Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a BBQ in London. I am a self taught photographer, so every photo is a new challenge and experience for me.

Time

This photo was taken at an evening BBQ. I remember trying several shots on different settings to try and get this shot right. The camera was mounted on my tripod for stability in low light, in addition to this the picture was shot with a fill flash.

Lighting

I wanted this image to be inviting and give a real sense of what a good flamed grilled burger is. This was shot at night with low light, as such i used a flash to paint the picture with light and to pick up as much smoke as possible.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 650 D with a canon 19 - 55 mm lens and a canon speedlite 430EX III

Inspiration

I was looking to capture the theater of cooking as well as the atmosphere of a good old fashioned backyard BBQ.

Editing

I ran this photo through lightroom just to touch up things like detail and clarity. For the most part this photo is largely untouched and as it was shot.

In my camera bag

I use a canon 650D camera body. My go to lens is always my sigma 10 - 22 mm lens and is usually always mounted to my camera body. my second favorite lens is the sigma DG 70 - 300 mm macro lens, a monster lens perfect for zoom as well as macro work. In addition to this i have canon 50 mm, canon 55 - 250 mm and canon 18 - 55 mm lenses. I also have a canon 430 EX speedlite, tripod and gorilla pod as well as various filters and remote triggers.

Feedback

I would absolutely recommend a tripod for any shot at night time with low light. Remember that with a photo like this you are dealing with an element that you cant control in smoke. Take your time, figure out the shot and take multiple shots for the best possible composure.
