The photo is shot at my cottage high up on a mountain slope in west Iceland during the middle of the winter.Time
After a snow blizzard with howling winds that lasted two days the weather calmed down with a clear sky and much frost, an excellent condition for Northern lights. Me and Tata, my dog, were glad to get out of the house as it was impossible to out during the storm.Lighting
was amazed how strongly the Northern lights appeared on the photos, but then again, when shooting moving Northern lights they kind of paint themselves on the frame when they dance in the sky.Equipment
I held the camera on wooden fence near the house and shot a couple of shots with different exposures. Tata stumbled into the frame and there were a couple of shots with her in motion - But then she sat down and I managed to hoot some with her posing by the side of the house. IInspiration
Living in Iceland I grew up with Northern lights or as we sometimes refer the as dancing elves and actually I hate Northern lights photos, probably because of how kitchy and fake they often appear as a moving light shot with long exposure. What interested me more was that my cotttage that is black was now like painted white with snow after the snow blizzard.Editing
The area with Tata was very dark so I had to lighten that portion up a bit to almost to grainy - otherwise it wasn't manipulated. In my camera bag
I always carry my small RX100 camera with me as it is a very portable one and shoots in excellent quality. I also uses my iphone a lot lately as I do not look at myself as a photo Nerd and don't have any big and expensive camera. When hiking, traveling and riding horses, I can put my RX100 into my pocket and take it with me all over - I plan to buy the newest model when I'll be able to. This one has gone into water, snow and sandstorms and been tramped on by a herd of horses, so I don't know how long it will last much longer.Feedback
Use any means of equipment you got - It the eye behind the camera that counts - not the one in front - Don't become a photo gadget nerd - create. ;-)
