Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at the downtown San Diego trolley station.

Time

I took this at dusk, my favorite time to shoot.

Lighting

At dusk there is still enough daylight to provide some lighting, you get the deep blue sky visible here above the station, and interior and exterior lights are coming on. Those lights bring the photos to life.

Equipment

Taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mk II and the Canon 24-105mm f/4 L lens. Also a tripod and remote shutter release.

Inspiration

Sometimes I just pick a neighborhood or area to walk around with the camera and see what I can find. I had been shooting next door at the old Santa Fe train depot and was cutting through here on the way back to my car when I saw this.

Editing

There were three bracketed exposures processed with an HDR program.

In my camera bag

I am currently shooting with the Canon EOS 5D S R 50 megapixel camera. It's amazing. I carry two lenses, the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS and the Canon 24-105mm f/4 L. I always have a tripod and shutter cable release as well.

Feedback

Shoot bracketed exposures. Even if you do not use an HDR program you can blend them. Better to have those extra shots then not because you might only get one chance to capture the scene. And sometime down the road you might revisit an old shot and want to process it differently or with new, better software where the bracketed exposures might be needed.
