During the summer of 1924, J.W. Humphry, the Supervisor of Powell National Forest (now a part of the Dixie National Forest) was so amazed with the wonders of the Bryce Canyon area that he wanted to make the area accessible by automobile. To secure funding for construction of a road, Humphry was to impress local dignitaries by digging two tunnels to create a gateway to Bryce Canyon. Humphry's dream became a reality on June 1, 1925 when the Red Canyon Tunnels were completed. Utah 12 passes through these two tunnels as part of the Red Canyon. Both tunnels are very short, and they cut through the red rock. Pull outs are available on either side of both tunnels to allow for picture taking and closer inspection. A bicycle and walking path is located adjacent to the highway on the south side, and that allows for safe walking between the two tunnels.
Tunnel Trail starts near the western most tunnel, it climbs 200 feet to a viewpoint over the road, valley and the surrounding wooded hills. This is the vantage point in which this photo was taken; it enables a photographer to encompass both tunnels in one shot.

It is exactly the same POV that they used on a brochure to advertise Red Canyon. It was fun figuring out how to access the same vantage point and then snap the photo without cars and trucks in it.
