Behind The Lens

Location

I was walking around my backyard one afternoon, I enjoy growing flowers. Everyday when I get home from work I take a walk around my yard. Very often I bring my camera. It allows me release the stress of the day, there is so much beauty all around.

Time

Its been a while since I took this picture, but it was probably early to mid afternoon. The bees were working the garden.

Lighting

Well I used natural light, no flash. There was a sliver of light on the flower under and around the bee. Also behind the bee was bright enough to bring out the dark hairs and tone of the bee itself. Behind the bee were other flowers so they added a nice colorful blur in the background.

Equipment

I had my now secondary camera, Canon 5D Mark III with Canon 16-35mm f4L lens. I don't remember if I used my monopod, I know I didn't use a tripod now flash. I really was just looking for candid captures. I really didn't have any setup time.

Inspiration

I enjoy taking macro pictures of my flowers but to grab a nice shot of some bees working my flowers was a real treat. Even being so close to them flying around was fun.

Editing

I did import into Lightroom. I also cropped into the bee. Looking at the original the background was really well lit and I didn't really have to process much more. There was a sliver of light on the flower itself that brought out the color.

In my camera bag

Right now my main camera is my new Canon 1DX Mark II. When I travel I do take many of my lenses. I just came back from a trip to St. Maarten/Anguilla. I took everything, yes the bag was heavy. I took my 70-200 2.8 II, my 100-400mm, 100mm Macro, 16-35mm F4 L, 24-70mm II 2.8, yes also my 2 Zeiss lenses, my Zeiss 24mm and 85mm 1.4. All but my Zeiss are Canon. I always bring a Speedlite flash. I always carry my Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

I was just looking at the many pictures I have on Lightroom from that day. All the pictures were from a specific plant. About 3 feet around. I stayed in the general area of this flower while the bees were working it. Bees don't scare me, as long as you don't bother them they wont bother you. It was really fun.
