Location
A good friend of mine who is a top class wildlife photographer, also runs a bird of prey rescue centre in South Devon, England. This is one of his now resident birds (Barn Owl) and she goes by the name of 'Scamp'. She is a real character. She pretty much has the freedom of the place and tends to come and go as she pleases. You have to be quick to catch a shot of her!Time
Shot mid afternoon on a fairly overcast day. Perfect for panning flight shots.Lighting
If the sun is visible in the sky, for your own safety always pan away from it. In other words, if the sun is to your left, only pan right.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D200 and Nikkor AF-s 70-200mm f2.8 zoom set to f2.8. Hand held panningInspiration
My main photography is street and event so being offered the chance to shoot some fast moving, and beautiful subjects like birds of prey for the day, including owls and eagles, who was going to turn that one down?Editing
Slight cropping for balance. In my camera bag
For street work Nikon D7000 and 24-120mm f4 (My current all time favourite lens) For weddings and events I will also use a D700 with 28mm, 50mm or 85mm primes or of course the fabulous 24-120mm f4 but be aware of, and use to your advantage, some correctable barrel distortion on that one.Feedback
With digital, the only wasted shot is the one you don't try. If you get the chance, just say yes. every now and then go and deliberately shoot something you have never tried before. It keeps you fresh.
