Location
I live on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park in Southwest England. Whenever I am trying out a new lens or camera that's usually the first place I head for. This is a shot from Pew Tor. I was in the right place at the right time, just as I was setting up, the balloon festival in nearby Tavistock town was getting underway and the wind was in the right direction. Some people call that luck, but luck is only present where opportunity and preparation meet.Time
My favourite time of day on Dartmoor is just before and during 'Golden Hour'Lighting
At this time of the day the setting sun glints off the quartz in the granite and adds to the golden effect. The softened light also adds a pastel type scene that I love.Equipment
This was shot on very basic kit. Nikon D100, an old 1980's 28-80mm af f3.5-5.6 plastic kit lens and an old shaky video tripod.Inspiration
I had bought the lens very cheap in a local camera shop and wanted to try it outEditing
This is exactly how the scene looked to the naked eye with a myriad of balloons floating past. However, to make it look like this in a single image I combined three sequential images. In my camera bag
Currently a Nikon D7000 and 18-200mm VR lens is pretty much my day to day kit. If I am shooting for money, like a wedding or Carnival/event, I will use probably a D700 with 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 although I used my D7000 with an old 24-120mm streetsweeper lens this summer and got some excellent results.Feedback
Read the event sections in your local press. If you see something happening down the street, go and get close, you already have your camera with you right? Talk to the people involved and ask what is going on, nicely. Most of all, be curious. Try new things and enjoy being creative or just plain nosy. Don't be afraid to try a shot. Unlike film, this is digital. The only wasted shot is the one you didn't take.
