Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken driving west from Calgary towards Canmore and Banff, Alberta, Canada. My wife and I had flown into Calgary from Montreal and we rented a car intending to drive over the Rockies to Vancouver and then take the ferry to Victoria.

Time

This was taken about 10am in August, a spectacular summer morning.

Lighting

The sun was rising toward the peak of the day, very bright with some clouds.

Equipment

I had my Nikon D7100 with an 18-140 lens. I used neither flash nor tripod as the camera was hand-held.

Inspiration

The beauty of the scene could not be ignored. The rolling prairies abutting the approaching mountains and joined by the line of fence was an enticing composition. The blue, partially clouded sky capped the photo perfectly. I was moved to stop the car on a busy highway to capture this magnificence. I also was fortunate to have a white piece of paper half-way along the fence sitting on the grass. This simple piece of paper was a valuable addition to the photo.

Editing

There was a bit of cropping that had to be done, but that was all.

In my camera bag

My Nikon is a great camera. I carry two lenses with me, an 18-140 and a 70-300. I also carry a Nikon Speedlight SB-700 flash attachment and a few filters. An extra set of batteries is always necessary. Of course, some cleaning material is required to have on hand.

Feedback

Stopping on the Trans-Canada Highway, or any major thoroughfare can be dangerous. Safety first!! I needed to wait for a shoulder with some depth to adequately pull off the road. Secondly, I could not just shoot the prairie-mountain-sky photo. The fence was the major element that tied the photo together and was required to really set up the unity of the composition. Having the right light available was required to pick up the different blue shades of the mountains and the green shades of the foreground.
