Behind The Lens

Location

One of my rituals when living in Santa Cruz was to take a walk on Seacliff Beach in Aptos at least 3 times a week.

Time

The summer months in Santa Cruz are the foggy months. The heat in Silicon Valley on the other side of the Santa Cruz Mountains draws in the cooler air off the pacific. the fog forms and flows over the mountains creating what we refer to as Mother Natures air conditioning. the foggy conditions are also what allows the Redwood Forest to exist in our precious mountains. This was taken at 10:30 A.M. on a warm summer morning on August 17, 2012.

Lighting

Not a lot to say about lighting. Mother Nature made the settings. I set my camera settings at ISO 320, zoomed in to 170mm and shot at f/20 @ 1/125

Equipment

I used my Nikon D300S with a 18-200 zoom Nikon lens. Hand held, no tripod.

Inspiration

I love foggy days at the beach. It sets a certain mysterious, almost claustrophobic as well as calming mood. Figures become ghostly. This day was one of the better ones.

Editing

Post processing was done using PhotoShop Elements 11. I removed dust spots, converted to B&W and cropped.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a Nikon D300S, Nikon D200, Nikon 18-200 and 80-300 zoom lens's as well as a manual Nikon 2.8 50mm lens that I've had since 1968.

Feedback

The only advice is to take advantage of those foggy days. Look for the things that are barely visible through the fog. Go for the contrast and the mood.
