Location
This photo was taken in Alamogordo New Mexico. The rancher loves his horses. He has such great patience and passion when he works with the horses, I could not pass up the opportunity in hoping to capture his work!Time
I was on this ranch doing a model photoshoot of a woman and horse during the mid morning. While waiting for her to change outfits the rancher decided to move the horse around to keep it focused on his commands. The image was taken May 4, 2013 during the time of 10:19am.Lighting
The lighting was all nature light. I would like to do more horse photography and capture them in their natural environment. I have tried to use flash or reflectors it had its down side for the reason it would spook the animal.Equipment
I used a Canon 50D with kit lens of 28-135mm.Inspiration
Horses are magnificent animals. I have seen other photographers capture the horse beauty and I would love to keep working on my photography skills in this field. Living in New Mexico we have plenty of horses and cowboys, this gives me the best opportunitys!Editing
I did some levels on the white balance and dodge and burning mostly. The photo was mostly for myself and memories of the day of the great horse so i tried to keep it as real as I could.In my camera bag
I have updated some of my equipment since this photo was taken. I now carry a 5D Mark lll in my bag with a couple of lens. My favorite lens to carry is my Canon 100mm. My back up lens or I should call my carry all is Canon 24-105mm. I will also carry my speed light 600 ex-rt along with some fun filters. Depending on the location and shoot I will take my tripod.Feedback
To capture an animal this quick it would be best if you had all your camera settings ready to go and your focus right on point…This shot was taken in a quick second. I did not have my camera set to high speed shooting. That may have given me more to select from of the horse and his jump. I was only able to capture this one image with the settings during this moment. Also I would ask the trainer/rancher when is the best time of the day for the animal for a photo shooting.
